Professor Derek Black, author of “Schoolhouse Burning,” shared his views on public education and democracy.
Derek Black is a Professor of Law at the University of South Carolina School of Law and the Ernest F. Hollings Chair in Constitutional Law. He is one of the nation’s foremost experts in education law and policy. His research appears in the nation’s top legal journals, including Yale Law Journal, Stanford Law Review, New York University Law Review, Cornell Law Review, and dozens more. His research has been cited several times in the federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, and has led to expert testimony in school funding, voucher, and federal policy litigation. His most recent book, Schoolhouse Burning: Public Education and the Assault on American Democracy, explains the threat that current trends pose not just to public education, but also to democracy itself.
